SIDS Ribbons
SIDS ribbons are a wonderful way to spread awareness of SIDS and also to honour a little one you've lost to SIDS. SIDS ribbons can be easily made, and for something more durable, I have metal SIDS ribbon pins available for purchase as well, just visit this page.
For anyone interested in making a SIDS awareness ribbon to wear, Becky (Isaiah's mommy) shared the instructions. I've made some, and they're pretty easy to make.
If you would like to see all of the ribbons people have sent to me, please visit this page. French blue ribbons with the pink flower are SIDS Awareness ribbons, the two-colour (blue and pink) ribbons are Infant Loss Awareness ribbons.
Here is what you will need:
- 3/8 inch synthetic french blue ribbon
- small pink rosettes (silk flowers)
- glue gun and glue sticks
- adhesive glue (such as Elmer's white glue)
- 3/4 inch pin backs
- lighter or candle
- optional: paper plate, tooth picks, no fray bottled spray
Instructions:
- Prepare ribbon by cutting in lengths of 6 to 6 1/4 inches
- Prepare rosettes by cutting each rose off their "bunches" (unless you purchased little single roses in a bag). Be careful not to cut too short or they will unravel.
- Fold the ribbon to cross. Fold the ribbon so that the arch would cover the rosette.
- Glue at the cross with the glue gun. Press to take hold. Let dry.
- Glue the rose at the front of the cross. Hold it in place. Let dry.
- Squeeze the adhesive glue on something disposable such as a paper plate. Apply some glue to the back of the ribbon with a tooth pick. Place the pin back in the center of the ribbon.
Note: Hold the pin back until glue is set, otherwise the pin back will slide off or dry in an uneven position.
- Cut the ends of the ribbon at an angle to point down toward thecenter.
- Use a lighter or candle to melt the ends of the ribbon to preventfraying. Be careful not to burn yourself. Alternately to stop fraying you can purchase a bottle of no-fray stuff to help stop fraying. It only costs a few dollars.
- You can keep some ribbons for yourself, hand them out to all of your friends and family, and if you would like you could also send some to SIDS Families in memory of your child. They will be handed out with TLC packs to grieving families.

If you decide to send some in memory of your child, please feel free to attach them to a small card with your baby's information on it. Something similar to what others have done in the pictures on this page. Please don't feel obligated to send any, it's something some people like to do in their baby's memory but not something anyone must do. We have swapped ribbons a few times in the groups and it's always a nice thing to get something so special which was done in memory of another baby.
Thanks for the Donated Ribbons!
I would like to thank all the special people who have sent me a bulk donation of ribbons to be sent out to other grieving families. Your ribbons have traveled great distances sometimes and are very much appreciated both by me, and those who receive them. Thanks to:
